Monte Cristo – Long Gully gold prospect
The Monte Cristo – Long Gully area has a long history of rich alluvial mining, particularly in the 1980’s. Earlier shafts and diggings occur at the Monte Cristo and other mines (Crows Nest, Pig Eye, City of Carlisle, Blue by You, Leo, Tartan, Lucky Hit and Wildflower) in the immediate area.
The aerial photograph below shows the extent of alluvial mining in this district. One notable feature is that the source of gold appears to correlate with granite contacts. In the field mapping has shown extensive granite contact gold mineralization is spread over a wide area.

Detailed mapping of the Monte Cristo mine area has shown the mineralization is present in greisen (altered country rock) along the contact with the Digger Creek leucogranite. A selvedge of pegmatite lies on the eastern contacts of this granite. As this pegmatite has been shown to also contain gold mineralization the potential exists for a porphyry deposit to underlie the area.
